With metformin being the most prescribed medication in the world, many new clinical trials are being conducted each year to further research the effects and benefits of metformin. It is widely known that metformin treats type-2 diabetes but it also is being tested to determine its weight loss effects and overall effect on the body.

In a recent study conducted by Genovate Biotechnology Co., LTD, diabetes patients were transferred from sulfonylurea to glyburide/metformin combination tablets. The main objective of the study was to determine if switching over to the glyburide/metformin combination tablets would be safe or if there would be adverse effects on the body. Another objective was to evaluate the overall safety of glyburide to see if it was an inferior product compared to sulfonylurea.

The study was conducted over a year in 12 different patients. Researches found that the glyburide/metformin were indeed safe to switch over from sulfonylurea. They also found that glyburide had no different major side effects then other metformin medications. It was determined that glyburide is overall a safe medication to take and was not inferior to other similar medications.

Another 31 clinical trials of metformin have been conducted regarding the effectiveness of it against placebos. In every single clinical trial, metformin came out on top over placebos. Metformin was noted by almost every single researcher to be much less painless to take by diabetes patients and that it was much more effective in controlling the body’s functions to a stable level.

In a final study conducted by a multi-center US clinic, 806 diabetes patients were tested with glyburide metformin hydrochloride. The patients’ diabetes could not be controlled by regular diet and exercise so they were considered to be patients with an absolute need of medication. After a twenty week trial, researchers found that the combination yielded the best results to control the patients diabetes, and proved much more efficient then metformin, glyburide or a placebo by themselves. Researchers also found that the doses could be much lower if a combination of glyburide metformin hydrochloride was taken.

Research is going to be continued on the effects of glyburide and metformin for many years to come. Research seems to point towards the two medications to be the best form of treatment of diabetes. Currently, there are three open clinical trials on the medications to determine just how effective the combination is in regards to weight loss. It is currently believed that while the combination is no replacement for a healthy diet and exercise, it may provide the body with the extra support it needs to get down to a healthy weight and to function as best as it possibly can. As much research is completed regarding glyburide and metformin, this page will be updated so that the most up to date material can be given.

If you have just recently discovered that you have type 2 diabetes, then chances are you are starting to look at different treatments. There are a variety of treatments you can choose that depend on your needs and severity of your diabetes. Before you even think about long-term treatments you need to learn a few basic skills that all diabetes patients will need to know at some time to carefully monitor their diabetes. It’s especially important for younger children to start learning how to care for their diabetes, even if you have to help them with some of the skills, since there may come a time when they may have to check their blood sugar levels or blood glucose levels on their own.

How to recognize high and low blood sugar levels

How to handle sickness and other disease

How to plan your diet and exercise routine

How to test your blood sugar levels

The doctor is going to most likely going to require you start working on a diet plan and making a habit of regular exercise. This is because exercise lowers insulin levels even if you are not losing weight. A healthy diet obviously offers nutrients to enter the body and helps shed extra belly fat.

You will most likely be required to take some sort of medication. Most diabetes medications come in pill form or must be taken directly with an injection. If you are having trouble creating insulin, then a Sulfonylurea will most likely be prescribed. Sulfonylurea medications glimepride, glyburide and tolazamide tell the pancreas to create more insulin. They are often taken in the form of small tablets.

The most common medication for diabetes is metformin. Metformin is mostly used to treat overweight or obese diabetic individuals due to its aid in weight loss. Metformin is a biguanide that tells the liver slow down the creation of glucose and removes glucose from the bloodstream by increasing the amount of glucose absorbed by the liver and fat cells. This lowers the blood sugar levels in the body.

While a large number of people taking metformin do not experience any side effects, they do occur. Most of the time they are very minor and do not last long. The main side effects are cramps, nausea, vomiting, and an upset stomach. In very rare instances metformin use can lead to lactic acidosis. However, research has led scientists to believe that a complication like liver or kidney failure leads to lactic acidosis, not metformin itself.

Metformin is extremely easy to take. Most patients receive 500mg tablets to take with a glass of water. However, you can get 850mg and 1000mg tablets if prescribed. Different formulations provide either a fast release or slow release of the drug into the body. Essentially, the slow release tablets are to ease the body into the drug and hopefully minimizing the side effects that someone may experience.

Metformin is currently the top selling diabetes treatment in the world. Over 48 million prescriptions were written in 2010. While this is not good, because the growing number of diabetes cases is alarming, metformin provides the absolute best chance at someone living a normal life. If you are a diabetes patient, talk to your doctor about possibly using metformin. Don’t let your diabetes take control of your life, act before it is too late.

Recent studies are showing signs of promise in the use of metformin for alternative purposes. While it is commonly used to treat diabetes, new studies have shown that it may help accelerate weight loss among non-diabetic individuals.

The reason metformin is being researched as a weight loss drug is due to its’ appetitive suppressing ability and its ability to lower insulin levels. Numerous people worldwide have noted the suppression of their appetite to be true. Some people have stated that they take a metformin pill ten to five minutes before they eat a meal. An overwhelming majority say that if they take a metformin pill before a meal that they will often eat less and feel fuller much earlier then they normally would have.

Insulin control is a more complex system. Many people are overweight simply because their body creates too much insulin. When insulin levels increase, the body responds by giving you a hungry feeling, thus leading to overeating and weight gain. Insulin also causes the liver to convert extra calories into fat cells, which are then stored in the belly, thigh and back regions of the body. Metformin lowers the insulin level in the body so that there is no hungry feeling as well as less fat being stored in the body.

Many studies have been targeted children, due to the large increase of cases of obesity. In a recent study conducted by the Cardiology Department of the Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, eighteen children were given a daily dose of metformin. After a twelve-week trial, researches noted that thirteen of the children had lost weight, one child stayed the same, and four gained weight. While the trial does not prove that metformin will help everyone lose weight, it does provide a glimmer of hope that it can help a large number of obese individuals lose weight. Further studies are being contact as we speak and when they are complete, their results will be updated so that the latest information about metformin can be provided.

Studies have found that metformin does have its limits. Foods that have high sugar levels will not help you lose weight. For example, taking metformin then eating two donuts is not going to help you lose weight. In reality, you will either stay the same or gain weight if you do not follow a healthy diet. For the best results, take a capsule of metformin ten or fifteen minutes before a meal. You can safely take two to three capsules a day.

Many drugs have adverse effects if taken with metformin so consult your doctor before taking metformin. It also should not be taken by athletes because it lowers performance by lowering the blood sugar levels. Some athletes have actually passed out because their blood sugar levels have dropped too low. Metformin is looking to be very promising as a weight loss drug and has the potential to revolutionize how people lose weight in a safe manner.

Most doctors and physicians will tell you that it is not a good idea to consume alcohol when taking metformin. As the case with most drugs, the combination metformin and alcohol can wreak havoc in your body. However, if you like to socialize and have a drink once in awhile and are taking metformin then listen up and get all the facts.

While there are several metformin side effects, there is one side effect that is potentially dangerous. While rare, lactic acidosis can be potentially fatal. Alcohol also increases your risk of lactic acidosis so combining alcohol with metformin may not be a good idea provided you already have a weak kidney and liver. If you have a normal functioning kidney and liver you are not as much at risk for complications. You definitely do not want to drink large amounts of alcohol but two beers or a glass of wine certainly is not going to kill you.

You should also consult your doctor before drinking alcohol. In most cases, you will probably be given the okay to have a drink once in awhile. However, your doctor will probably tell you to avoid daily use of alcohol to prevent your liver from weakening. If you do experience pain or an upset stomach when drinking alcohol you need to consult a doctor immediately. This could mean you have developed lactic acidosis and need to be treated right away.

The general rule of thumb you need to follow is not to overdo it. If you go out, socialize, and drink responsibly, you should have no problem drinking while using alcohol. You will only run into problems if you abuse it by drinking too much or by frequently drinking. And if you can avoid alcohol consumption while you are on Metformin, certainly try to do so. As mentioned while there are risks of lactic acidosis, while taking metformin, if you can avoid these side effects by not drinking Alcoholic beverages, that is certainly the recommended thing to do. Also, carefully consider the recommendation of your doctor and what he advises you as it pertains to your unique health conditions and risks. Each person has a different health makeup. So you should consult with your doctor and ask for his advice prior to drinking any alcoholic beverage. Chances are he will advise that in low moderation, you can consume alcoholic beverages while on metformin. However, as previously pointed out, if you are at greater risk of lactic acidosis or already have a weakened liver, your doctor most likely is going to recommend that you avoid consuming alcoholic beverages while on metformin.

Metformin, the most common type 2 diabetes medication, comes in many different doses depending on your particular needs. Before taking metformin, it is recommended you start with a lower dosage to allow your body to get used to the drug. There is currently no set dosage guideline. Your doctor should prescribe your dosage based on your tolerance and individual needs. The only thing you should not do is exceed the recommended daily limit of 2,550 mg in adults and 2,000 mg in children.

To start, both adults and children will normally start at two doses of 500mg daily. Metformin should also be taken right before a meal. You should wait at least two weeks upon first starting metformin to see how your body responds to the medication. If you have severe metformin side effects, then you need to lower your dosage so that your body can better respond to the metformin. If the dosage does not adequately control your glycemic levels, a third dosage of 500mg can be taken.

For adults, most patients say they do not see much effect if they take anything lower then 1,500mg a day. If adults do not respond well to 500mg before two meals, an 850mg dose can be given once a day. It is recommended that you do increase your dosage 500mg a week up until 2,000mg are taken a day. For those who need further medication, another 500mg may be taken if properly taken and spread throughout the day. For children, the limit is only 2,000mg. Most of the time metformin will be given twice daily before meals in the form of 500mg doses. Both children and adults can take 1,000mg tablets twice a day if taken at a meal like breakfast and then during a late supper.

Unless switching to metformin from chlorpropamide, no transition period is necessary. If you were taking chlorpropamide, you need to take extra care of what you take due to the prolonged retention of chlorpropamide. The overlapping drug effects can sometimes cause hypoglycemia, which is why you need to monitor your dosage until your body removes all of the chlorpropamide.

Patients with liver or kidney problems also need to take extra precautions when using metformin. As discussed previously, liver and kidney patients can develop a serious side effect called lactic acidosis, which is a buildup of lactic acid in the bloodstream. This can cause death or other severe injury if it is not properly treated. If you are a patient with liver or kidney problems, you will probably not increase your recommended dosage for a longer period of time so your doctor can make sure that you do not have the beginning stages of lactic acidosis.

Before taking metformin, discuss your dosage with your doctor and figure out a dosage that you feel comfortable taking each day. Likewise, if your current dosage is not working well for you speak up so you can increase your dosage. Metformin is the best way to treat your diabetes, you need to be proactive to make sure that your diabetes is under control and your body is functioning properly.

Even though metformin is approved by the Food and Drug Administration, it has come with some problems within the past few years. The drug is considered to be safe to treat people with type 2 diabetes and has very mild side effects, if any, for most people. However, a few cases have sprung up where people have developed lactic acidosis and later died from kidney failure.

Lactic acidosis is a buildup of lactic acid in the bloodstream and can potentially deadly if not treated early enough. Metformin has been known to cause this in people with poorly functioning kidneys. Some people have tried to form a metformin lawsuit but for the have failed every single time. The reason for this is because metformin, under the brand name, glucophage, has a very clear warning on the box that indicates this is a very rare metformin side effect and can be potentially fatal. The courts have ruled that the manufacturers have provided enough warning to put the responsibility on the patient and the doctors.

If you are taking metformin, you need to be aware of the signs of lactic acidosis. These symptoms include rapid breathing, shortness in breath, and severe weakness. If you experience one or more of these symptoms, contact your doctor immediately. You also need to make sure that you stop using any type of metformin medication until you receive a notice from your doctor that you are safe to use it again. You can be tested for lactic acidosis and can be treated accordingly before it is too late.

More successful lawsuits regarding metformin have been targeted at doctors. The makers of metformin clearly tell doctors that patients with existing kidney problems should not be prescribed metformin. A report that was issued by the American Medical Association found that many doctors had prescribed many patients metformin, even though they knew the patient was suffering from a kidney or heart disorder. The study suggested that doctors are not fully aware of the dangers of metformin and may not be aware that they are prescribing the drug even though it is against a black box warning.

Currently, there are no lawsuits against metformin or the specific brand names related to metformin. As a patient it is your responsibility to talk to your doctor to make sure that it is safe to use metformin. If you are unsure, then you should consult another doctor to get a second opinion. It is not the manufacture’s fault if you experience severe symptoms because the drug has clear warnings and instructions to prevent instances of lactic acidosis and even death.

It needs to be mentioned again that metformin is a very safe drug when used correctly. Obviously, it is no different from any drug – if you abuse it, then there may be consequences. Make sure you have no kidney or heart issues and you will no problem using metformin.

Metformin, the world’s most prescribed drug, is commonly used to treat type 2 diabetes. While there are little to no side effects of the drug, many women have raised concerns about using the drug during pregnancy. Pregnancy does change a woman’s body tremendously, so their body may not respond to the same way it would under normal circumstances. The question that is normally asked is, “Is metformin safe to use during pregnancy?”

The short answer is yes. Most doctors and physicians will tell you that you can continue to use metformin during pregnancy if in the first trimester (one to three months). There is no evidence to support any theory that birth complications or malformations will occur if a woman takes metformin during her first trimester of pregnancy.

A recent study conducted by the Motherisk Program confirmed this. In a retrospective study, 72 patients exposed to Metformin and 48 patients not exposed to metformin were studied. The rate of malformations was very similar in both groups. However, the metformin group did have a slightly higher rate of multiple births and prematurity. However, researchers believe this was due to the use of fertility drugs and not metformin itself. In total, birth complications and malformations were below 3% in both groups.

In another study among 200 women, the results were very promising. 80 women stopped using metformin during pregnancy and 120 women kept taking the drug. The control group actually had a higher instance of miscarriages (36%) then the group still taking metformin (11%). The study further found that metformin has no significant effect on the healthiness of a baby or influence on malformations.

After the first trimester, it is still debated whether or not metformin should still be taken. While the studies seem to indicate metformin is safe, some doctors and researchers feel more studies need to be conducted to fully prove that metformin is safe to take all the way through a pregnancy. If you are feeling uncomfortable about taking metformin because of the potential risks or uncertainty in complications, talk to your doctor and look for an alternate medicine. The last thing you want to do is to be stressing about whether something horrible will happen when your hormones are already uncontrollable.

Hopefully over the next few years, more studies can be conducted to clear up the confusion about the use of metformin. So far researchers have determined that metformin does not increase the risk for a miscarriage, spontaneous abortion or malformations. However, as stated above the research has only been in small clinically trials that don’t really provide the large samples needed to prove metformin is safe. If you are currently pregnant or are looking to conceive a child, do what is most comfortable for you. Do not let a spouse or doctor convince you to keep taking metformin if you are not comfortable. It is your body, do what you think is best for you and your baby.

With the success of metformin in treating diabetes, new studies are being conducted everyday to test its effectiveness in metformin weight loss usage. Studies are specifically targeting diabetes patients to see if metformin can help them lower their weight until they are at a healthy weight, and how metformin weight loss can effect a patients life.

The reason metformin weight loss is being researched is because metformin lowers your glucose level. This means the liver will produce less fat cells which means less fat will be stored in the body. The use of Metformin weight loss, also has been found to decrease appetite for a longer period of time, which leads to less overeating and feeling fuller for a longer period of time.

In a recent clinical trial conducted by New York Medical College, 80% of women who took a modified carbohydrate while taking metformin weight loss plan, lost on average 10% of their body weight after only a year. Even better, the study also found that 90% of the women patients who used metformin weight loss, still kept the weight off after four years.

Another study conducted by Jack Yanovski, at the National Institutes of Health, found that a twice-daily dosage of metformin for weight loss, used with weight control coaching dramatically improved 3 areas of metabolic syndrome in overweight children with insulin resistance. The same study found that after the six-month metformin weight loss trial, the patients had much higher metabolisms and had much healthier internal body functions.

A third study conducted at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center was not so promising. The study found that metformin weight loss, provided no value towards weight loss of an unidentified number of people without diabetes. The study found that the test group had no significant weight loss and determined that metformin weight loss did not influence weight loss in anybody among the group. The study did point out that these test subjects did not have diabetes and that in other studies in patients with diabetes, metformin weight loss, does have a major influence in overall weight loss.

These are just three major metformin weight loss studies that have already been completed. According to U.S. National Institutes of Health, there are over 10 metformin weight loss studies currently in progress regarding metformin and its influence on weight loss. Some of these studies are even in the process to test the weight loss effects of metformin on patients with other diseases such as schizophrenia and metabolic syndrome x. As these studies are completed, the results will be posted.

Even with all of the positive supporting evidence, Metformin weight loss, should not be considered a miracle weight loss drug. Patients still need to maintain a healthy diet and participate in some sort of physical activity. Otherwise, metformin will treat diabetes but will have no effect on weight loss.

Even if studies seem to point towards metformin positively influencing weight loss, the effects are not 100% certain. Most research has found that metformin weight loss, seems to have a positive influence if a patient has a disease but not to those without disease. Regardless, metformin weight loss has been proven to not cause any weight gain, which is vital due to most type 2 diabetes patients being overweight. Plus even if a metformin weight loss treatment plan does not cause you to lose weight, metformin is still is the best medication on the market to treat your diabetes.

Each year, millions of people worldwide develop a life-threatening disease called diabetes. Diabetes affects how the body either creates insulin or how the body responses to insulin. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes and mostly affects adults, especially obese individuals. With type 2 diabetes, the body has insulin resistance. Insulin resistance means that cells in the body do not respond normally to insulin and sugar does not enter the cells to be stored as energy.

A major problem with type 2 diabetes is that many people who have it have no symptoms whatsoever. However, there are some things you should look out for if they occur for a prolonged period of time. They include blurred vision, erectile dysfunction, constant fatigue, increased thirst, increased urination, increased appetite and slow healing infections and cuts. If you do have experience a few of these symptoms, you should contact your doctor and schedule an appointment immediately. By waiting, you put yourself at a greater risk to develop serious injuries, many of which can be life threatening.

Once you actually go to the doctor and find out you have type 2 diabetes your next move is to determine how to treat your disease. Whatever your treatment is, the goal is to lower your high blood glucose levels immediately. Long-term goals should help prevent diabetes-related complications so you can continue to live a normal, happy life.

Most likely your doctor is going to set you up with a nutritionist. Proper diet and exercise is vital to lower your glucose levels and get them to a normal level. It is vital you follow the diet plan given to you so that your body can properly function and so you can start losing weight. Most likely you will be told you will also need to start some sort of exercise program. Normally this includes starting out with a brisk walk everyday. Eventually, you will most likely need to do some form of intense cardio or sport.

In most cases, you will also receive some medication to help control your diabetes. The most common drug to treat diabetes is metformin. Metformin is an oral anti-diabetic drug that tells the liver to produce less glucose. Metformin also helps cells absorb more glucose from the bloodstream, thus lowering blood sugar levels. It is also the only drug clinically proven to prevent cardiovascular complications that are associated with diabetes. You should talk to your doctor to discuss potential metformin side effects. While most people do not experience many side effects when using metformin, some people complain of an upset stomach.

If you have type 2 diabetes, talk to your doctor about possibly using metformin. Most of the time it is covered under your insurance plan but if you do not have insurance it is still readily available for you to take. Plus, it is very simple to take and it is most likely the best chance you have to reduce any symptoms and to start living a normal, healthier life.
